Abstract Portraits

Collaboration with photographer Chris Gallo


Fascinated by the duality of Representation and Abstraction in portraits, we wanted to explore the union of how the two mediums have sought to represent the human figure.


Models are adorned with assemblages created from scraps of paintings and paper and their skin is painted with elements of the abstraction. Then in collaboration with Fresh Tomato Studio, we photographed them in front of sparse backgrounds or another painting.


The complexity of the final image gives the viewer a moment to contemplate the interaction of gestures and materiality.
